The Route

The route we will be taking is shown in the picture below, it is from east to west across the Atlantic from La Gomera in the Canary Islands, to Antigua, in the West Indies.

  • The race starts on the 6th of December 2009.
  • The route is approximately 3,000 miles.
  • We are aiming to take between 60 and 80 days.

In order to complete the race with in this time frame we will need to cover approximately 50 miles a day. However, this will not always be possible as on occasions the current and extreme weather conditions will prevent us from rowing at all. In which case we will be forced to use our sea anchor, which is like an under water parachute, which acts as an anchor and aids minimal movement in the wrong direction.

During the crossing we will expect to see vast amounts of sea life, including whales, sharks and jelly fish. We plan to fish when the opportunity presents itself and generally enjoy the trip as much as possible. There will be numerous tankers and others shipping vessels to avoid, which will mean we will have to be vigilant at all times. 30/40 foot waves will be commonplace.

In contrast to what we have been asked on many occasions this is the best time of year to go as weather conditions are safest and it will be very warm, reaching temperature well into the thirties. We should come back pretty tanned!
